The future of fintech in the Baltics took centre stage at this year’s Baltic Fintech Days in Riga, where industry leaders, policymakers and investors gathered to discuss how the region can strengthen its position as a globally competitive innovation hub.

One of the standout discussions focused on the relationship between innovation, talent and competitiveness in shaping the next generation of fintech ecosystems. Speaking during the panel “Competing for the Future: Innovation, Markets… and the Right People”, Ieva Jāgere, Director of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, highlighted the importance of creating an environment where both companies and talent can thrive.

A key message from the discussion was that innovation does not happen in isolation. High growth fintech ecosystems require not only capital and regulation, but also strong talent retention, fast decision making and close collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Latvia’s strengths were positioned around agility and accessibility. Compared to larger markets, the country benefits from faster communication between founders, regulators and institutions, allowing companies to move quickly and adapt in a rapidly evolving financial technology landscape. Combined with strong digital readiness and increasing cooperation across government, investors and entrepreneurs, Latvia is continuing to strengthen its reputation as a fintech friendly destination.

The wider discussion also reinforced the growing international relevance of the Baltic region. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania continue to gain recognition for their startup ecosystems, digital infrastructure and innovation driven economies. With fintech growth accelerating across the region, speakers highlighted the Baltics’ potential to become one of Europe’s most dynamic centres for financial innovation and digital entrepreneurship.

As global competition for talent and investment intensifies, events like Baltic Fintech Days demonstrate the importance of ecosystem collaboration and long term strategic thinking. The conversation in Riga made one thing clear: the Baltics are no longer emerging players in fintech, they are becoming serious contenders on the European stage.
